Offshore and unlicensed betting
Mississippi's gambling law does not name online or offshore betting. The general offence in Miss. Code 97-33-1 covers anyone who promotes or plays games for money or bets on games or events, with a fine of up to $500 per occurrence. Licensed casino gaming is exempt. Bills in 2025 and 2026 to add online games to this law, with felony penalties, did not pass.
The Gaming Commission reads the existing law to cover offshore sites. On June 17, 2025, it said online sportsbooks and sweepstakes casinos are illegal because wagers may only be accepted on the premises of a licensed establishment. It sent cease-and-desist letters, made criminal referrals, and warned that players risk prosecution and losing their deposits. The notice did not name the operators. Gaming Commission public notice
