Online Casinos in Michigan
Online casinos are legal in Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Internet Gaming Act in December 2019, and licensed online casinos went live on January 22, 2021, the same day as online sportsbooks. The Michigan Gaming Control Board lists every approved online casino and sportsbook on its legal vs. illegal gaming page.
The Board treats unlicensed sites, including some sweepstakes casinos, as illegal. It has sent cease-and-desist letters to sweepstakes operators such as Stake.us and VGW LuckyLand. MGCB announcement The Sweepstakes Casino Overview explains how sweepstakes casinos work.

Offshore and unlicensed betting
Michigan law makes it a felony to offer online sports betting or online casino games in the state without a Michigan Gaming Control Board license. Both the Lawful Sports Betting Act (MCL 432.413) and the Lawful Internet Gaming Act (MCL 432.313) set a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $100,000, or both. The Gaming Control and Revenue Act (MCL 432.218) carries the same penalty for running any unlicensed gambling operation. Neither online gaming act contains a separate offence for advertising an unlicensed site.
Neither act makes it a separate offence for an adult bettor to place a bet with an unlicensed or offshore site. The Michigan Penal Code has general gambling offences, such as MCL 750.301, that do not mention online or offshore betting. The Board enforces against operators: it sent Bovada a cease-and-desist letter in May 2024 (MGCB announcement) and has sent many more to offshore sites since, including 12 in December 2025.
