Matched Betting Risks with Soccer Props

Sportsbooks can have differences in house rules for soccer props. When matched betting, this can result in a financial loss if one of your bets voids and the other is graded as a loss. Before you read further, make sure you understand what house rules are. House rules are the settlement terms each platform applies to a market.

The most common difference is whether a sportsbook voids a player prop when the listed player does not start; there are also other differences, such as when a match is postponed.

Key Takeaways
  • Soccer player prop house rules differ by sportsbook depending on if the player starts.
  • If your matched bet involves a soccer prop, different house rules can leave you at risk of losing money.
  • Some platforms, such as Kalshi, settle to the closing line rather than voiding, which still creates risk.
  • Start and not-start is the main axis, but it is not the only one. Always verify the current rules for both platforms before you bet.

Note: House rules change, and this is only an example. The rules described here may change. Confirm the current settlement rules on both platforms before placing any bets.

The Core Problem

When matched betting, you are relying on one side winning and the other side losing. That only holds if both platforms grade the bet according to the same rules. If one platform voids your bet and the other grades your bet, the matched bet is no longer balanced. One side returns your stake, the other resolves to a win or a loss, and you are left holding a single open position.

For soccer player props, the most common cause of a void is the player not starting the match. Some platforms void the bet entirely. Others let it stand and grade it on what the player does after coming on as a substitute.

This guide covers the start/not-start difference because it is the most frequent. It is not the only way house rules can differ for soccer game props. Treat this as one example, not a complete list.

Different Settlement Behaviors

When a player does not start, player props tend to fall into one of three camps:

Void: The bet is canceled, and your stake is returned. NoVig, ProphetX, Caesars, and BetRivers are examples. MGM voids most player-stat props this way, though it stands goalscorer markets if the player comes on as a sub.

Grade on Sub: DraftKings and Kalshi both grade a if a player comes on as a substitute. DraftKings does not specifically state what happens if a player never enters the match, but Kalshi specifically states they grade at "fair market price". Fair market price is the last traded price (odds), which may be better or worse than your odds.

Always Grade: Polymarket grades based on the box score and resolves No/Under if the player is inactive or does not play.

What the Rules Actually Say

The differences are easier to see in the platforms' own words. A few examples:

NoVig: "For any player related market, the player must be in the starting 11 and receive at least 1 second of playing time for trades to have action. If a player is not in the starting 11, that market is void."

ProphetX: "Players not included in the starting squad are deemed non-runners for settlement purposes and these contracts are void."

DraftKings: "For player prop markets, bets are not voided solely because a player first participates in a game as a substitute instead of a starter."

Caesars: "If the selected player does not start the match, wagers on that player in that market are void even if they enter as a substitute and exceed the listed number."

Polymarket: "Resolves Yes if the player records one or more goals in the box score within the first 90 minutes plus stoppage time. If the player is listed as inactive or does not play, the market resolves No."

Kalshi: "If a player is active but never enters the game, the market settles to the last fair market price before game start. Once a player enters, it settles based on the player's goals scored."

Example

The tables below use a goalscorer prop (Over/Under 0.5 goals) held across two platforms, with NoVig as the voiding side in both.

NoVig vs. Polymarket: goalscorer prop (Over/Under 0.5 goals)
Player Outcome NoVig Polymarket Your Position
Starts and plays Grades normally Grades normally Hedged as intended
Comes on as a sub Voids, stake returned Grades on goals scored One leg exposed
Never enters Voids, stake returned Grades No One leg exposed

NoVig vs. DraftKings: goalscorer prop (Over/Under 0.5 goals)
Player Outcome NoVig DraftKings Your Position
Starts and plays Grades normally Grades normally Hedged as intended
Comes on as a sub Voids, stake returned Grades on goals scored One leg exposed
Never enters Voids, stake returned Not clearly stated,
likely voids
Likely safe,

DraftKings states only that a prop is not voided just because the player enters as a substitute. Their rule does not clearly address a player who never enters at all. They may void in that case, but do not assume it. Check the specific market before you rely on it.

In every row except the first, one leg voids and returns your stake while the other resolves to a win or a loss. You are no longer hedged.

Real World Example

  • Primary Bet: NoVig $100 on Under 0.5 goals at -200.
  • Hedge: Polymarket $47 on Over 0.5 goals at +220.

You have $147 wagered to win $150. If the player starts and both sides grade (one wins, one loses) you profit ~$3.

If the player does not start.

  • NoVig voids, your $100 stake is returned.
  • Polymarket still grades the bet.
    • Player did not score: the bet loses, and you lose $47
    • Player came on and scored: the bet wins, you win $103.40.

A position you entered to profit $3 became an unhedged bet on a player to get substituted in and then score a goal.

The Kalshi version is different but still risky. If the player is active but never enters, Kalshi does not void or grade win/loss. It settles your contract to the closing line. That price (odds) can be better or worse than your entry, so your exposure is the gap between the two. It is not a clean push.

Always Double Check

Our Bet Finders include a warning when a soccer prop appears in your Bet Finder results.

DarkHorse Odds warning that your bet finder results include soccer props, and house rules may vary.

Use the warning as a prompt to check, not as a guarantee. Review both platforms' rules for the specific market and confirm how each handles the market, keeping in mind that house rules may change over time.
